At age 4 and sometimes 5, I select colors based on my emotional preferences. I choose colors because I like them.
My portrayal of space is often non-representational. Objects may appear to float within my composition. I like to draw what I think is most important the largest so that it looks special and stands out.
By age 6, I typically include flat colors without shading in my art. These are sometimes called stereotypical colors because I draw grass and trees as a flat green and the sun as a bright yellow.
I use schemata to represent objects such as people, houses, and trees. I also incorporate sociocultural symbols in my art.
At age 6, I understand spatial relationships better. I often draw a baseline or multiple baselines to organize objects in my art.
